Merry Christmas and Heri za Kwanzaa!

Image
Yes I know I'm late to the party (it's been a hectic couple of days) BUT I wanted to take the time to say Merry Christmas and Heri za Kwanzaa! If you're like me and many people I know, you just got over a cold, the flu or some other sickness that kept you in bed this past week. Now that you’ve recovered (or once you recover if you’re still on bed rest) take the time to celebrate this holiday season with your loved ones. Christmas, of course, is about giving to others, showing them how much you appreciate all they’ve done this past year. But there’s more to give than just gifts, there’s also time, appreciation, patience, and love. And as important as it is to give that to other people, find ways to give it to yourself, Blackgirl. You cannot fill up other’s cups if there’s nothing in your own. Kwanzaa is a celebratio...

Dream Wild Dreams

Dream wild dreams That cannot be tamed by the whip of other's words trying to pound you into silence Dream dreams that soar and are ever-rising above the people who must look up to acknowledge that you dream Dreams whose wings spread further than the eye can see Dreams whose wings are unpredictable to the Ones who drown in oceans of doubt And believe you should drown too Never let yourself sink, Blackgirl Continue to soar Continue to fly Continue to dream Wildly. A dream of mine was fulfilled this week. It was a dream that meant so so much to me and I still can’t believe it to be true. I wrote this poem to tell you, don’t be afraid to dream, Blackgirl.  Don’t let the world convince you that it is worthless to do so.  Work hard towards your dreams. Push yourself towards them. And never settle for anything less -Ebony Esquiress

We will march on

It's taken me a while to bring myself to talk about the election here. I've been through a wide range of emotions from anger to sadness to depression to rage. However, I will say I did not feel an ounce of surprise. Disappointed? Absolutely.  Surprised? Not at all. We live in a country that freely allows commemorations of slavery to fly over the interstate. We live in a country that allows people who explicitly go against the safety and protection of its people to run them. We live in a country that would rather gaslight themselves into thinking our dark history isn't as dark as it actually is, and that if you point it out, you're the problem. We live in a country that excuses people for their ignorant behavior, essentially telling them it's okay to do it so long as they aren't around the 'wrong people' . And it is exhausting to tolerate all of this AND still show up and perform with class and sophistication (especially when they don't have to do ...

Halloween Costume Inspo

Image
(Rotate your phone horizontally for better access!)  Halloween is officially 2 weeks away, meaning we've gotta start pulling together these costumes, Blackgirl!!! Of course, seeing as this is a blog celebrating us, I thought I'd share some Blackgirl Halloween Costume Inspo! Princess Tiana           Starting off strong with a classic, you could create a costume from any of her three iconic looks! Storm (MCU)      This is one of my dream cosplays to be honest with ya'll. I'd LOVE to see someone pop out this Halloween (especially getting creative with her stark silver hair). Penny Proud Proud Family was an iconic show many of us grew up watching. Pay homage to the main character with this simple costume! * Bianca Belair / Naomi / Jade Cargil I'm a WWE fan (especially of these three women). Strong, talented, and breaking barriers with every match, they are Black excellence at its finest!!! Angelina Johnson (Harry Potter) I've always loved th...

Happy Black Girl Day Off!

Image
October 11th is... Black Girl Day Off! A day deadicated to Black women and girls taking a mental health day to take care of themselves and their minds. Blackgirls face unique external factors when it comes to mental health dispositions, which are the result of prejudice and discrimination based on race (Black) and gender (girl/femme presenting). This prejudice against Blackgirls and women is also known as misogynoir. It was noted by the U.S Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health that as of 2021, Blackgirls in high school were 60% more likely to attempt suicide than their non-Hispanic white counterparts. Due to adutification bias (the viewing of Blackgirls as more adult-like and less needing of nurturing, protection, and more knowledgable of adult topics) Blackgirls recieve less aid in mentally taxng or threatening situations, withb the expectation that we are 'mature enough to handle it on our own.' This idea has seeped itself into the mindset of...

Fall is Here!

Image
Hey Blackgirl, It's October (Happy Libra and Scorpio season btw), and you know what that means. Summer has officially come to a close! We'll be replacing beach dates with study dates and dark summer shades for reading glasses (unless you have perfect 20/20 vision, of course (I'm jealous)).  If you’re like me, I’m sure you’re very VERY excited for this season (and not just because it's my birthday month 😉) But because for many of us,  fall and the new school year means new beginnings. This also means seeing a large uptick in our schedules, which can lead to you not taking the time for yourself and your mental health. Sometimes you may not even know HOW to do that. So, here are my Top 5 Fall Activities that can help restore some of your energy when you're feeling overwhelmed with the business of life. #1- Baking Some of my earliest memories are cooking and baking with my Grandma. From homemade rice-krispies to johnny cakes, we always made something delicious in the k...
